Interview with our Teachers

What do our teachers really think about the crazy world of Yoga!

Katie Hunter

How do you feel about the rise of the perfect instagram yogi?

KH – Sometimes it can motivate me to practice (which is a good thing!) Other times it frustrates me; the whole point of yoga is non-judgment and to ego-tame. It can feel rather false and alienates more often than not. The point is to unite.
.

Are there poses you can’t do?

KH – Yes, after having 4 children and my last baby just 4 months ago, I stay away from dangerous abs.

Ab exercises are only really necessary in yoga to support the spine if you are not using your ‘banda locks’ properly.

I also love to run outside so I’m no flexi-lexi, this means that the splits are out.
.

Favourite yoga pose and why?

KH - Handstand! I am naturally strong but not so flexible and I love the change of perspective and playfulness of handstand, it reminds me of being a young girl and makes me feel that way!
.

What can we expect from you classes?

KH – They are strong with a spiritual undertone, the postures tend to be synchronized with breath.
.

Who is your yoga inspiration?

KH - Philip Urso and Stacy Dockins. There are more but these to got me hooked.
.

What retreats are you musing about?

KH - The one that I will set up in future!! Also anything in Peru…
.

Lululemons or Manduka?

KH - Lulus are great but I have to say I quite like the English brand, Sweaty Betty.
.

What distracts you in a yoga class?

KH – My toenails.
.

Are you vegan?

KH – Nope, everything in moderation, including moderation!
.

Favourite quote/passage heard in a yoga class?

KH – “The drama is optional!”
.

Would you ever do naked yoga?

KH – Never say never…

How do you feel about the rise of the perfect instagram yogi?

TF – It all looks so beautiful but it's an illusion. As a teacher, I feel under pressure to look the part and for my poses  to be circus/dancer body perfect🤸‍♂️. They are not. My back doesn’t do that and my shoulders are not playing along either. It’s gutting for my ego! Yoga practice, for me, is not about how it looks, but how it feels. Just be.

"It's better to live your own life imperfectly than to imitate someone else's perfectly." —Elizabeth Gilbert

 .

Are there poses you can’t do?

TF – Yes. My shoulders often won't play ball so I have perfectly imperfect twists and non-existent arm balances. My Crow asana only last about 2.5 seconds! I just watch Katie with my mouth wide open!!!!

 .

Favourite yoga pose and why?

TF - This is going to sound silly but..... classic downward dog. You should have seen my poor, lame, mengy downward dog a few years ago! I am so happy with how far I have come. Every time I come into the pose I am working adjust this and tweek that. Each time is a new and fresh exploration of what is possible. It's amazing to me that it doesn't get old; that there is always something more to learn. That's yoga in a nutshell.
.

What can we expect from you classes?

TF – I am motivated by the exploration of the physical in the realm of the spiritual. Huh? Ok........ I have always explored the realms of the spiritual through philosophy, meditation and psychology. However it has been only fairly recently that I have finally worked out that it is a jolly good idea to bring the body along for the ride! So for me, Yoga is a way to unite the body with the spiritual. So what on earth does this mean? I am greedy with the meditation! I love to allow people to truly enter yoga by leaving the world behind them when they come to class. 10 minutes of meditation helps them leave the world behind and get really present in my classes. We focus on presence and connection through movement.
.

Who is your yoga inspiration?

TF - Christopher Wallis, Krishna Das, Mark Stephens, Max Stromm, Sally Kempton (to name just a few). The work of Ana Forrest and Rod Stryker are really interesting at the moment.
.

What retreats are you musing about?

TF - Somewhere with beautiful sunshine. Relaxation and mediation. A slower pace of life!

.
Lululemons or Manduka?
TF - Manduka. Love the high waisted trousers and the mats are my total goto. Shout out to the t-shirts and shawls of https://www.millahamburg.de

 .

What distracts you in a yoga class?

TF - Me! My mind! That's why I meditate so much!

 .

Are you vegan?

TF - Nope!

 .

Favourite quote/passage heard in a yoga class?

TF - Everything inspires me in Yoga classes! The work of my teacher over at ShivaRocks (www.shivarocks.com) is constantly challenging me to know and learn more.

Would you ever do naked yoga?

TF - Not gonna happen. Nope. Na ha. I'll hold Katie's towel for her!!!!!!!
